AUDITIONS For The Shadow Box

Auditions will be held on Sept. 21, 22, 6:30 pm – 8:30 pm at the Shack. Auditions are cold readings from the script. Please have all possible conflicts with rehearsals, ready to include on your form.

SUMMARY

The Shadow Box is an impressionistic drama that looks into the last days of three people, residents of an experimental hospice situation for patients that are nearing death. How they are coping, both physically and emotionally, and how their family or close friends are dealing with the situation are being studied by psychoanalytical experts who are generally unseen and unheard, creating a distinct “ants under a glass” atmosphere. We use shadow boxes to save and protect special memorabilia of lost loved ones or special occasions. In this play, the boxes are already filled with those who are still with us, even if only briefly.

CHARACTERS

• Joe – 40’s, husband, father, dying resident. A gentle man with simple desires.
• Maggie – 40’s, Joe’s wife. A good person who can’t face the reality of losing her husband.
• Steve – 14-16, Joe and Maggie’s teenage son. Doesn’t know the truth about the situation. Is learning to play guitar.
• Brian – 60’s, dying resident living with his male partner. Brave while being terrified, artistic, a writer.
• Mark – 30’s, Brian’s partner, former prostitute, still quite immature, loving.
• Beverly – 60’s, Brian’s ex-wife and oldest friend. Drinks too much to hide strong feelings, extremely brash and funny party gal.
• Felicity – 80’s dying resident, wheelchair bound, nearly blind, advancing Alzheimer’s or dementia. Relies on one daughter while craving only the other one.
• Agnes – 40-50’s, Felicity’s daughter. Lives with her mother to take care of her. Emotionally and physically run down beyond recovery.
• Interviewer – 30-50’s, female professional. Kind but clinical. Voice only in Act 1, on stage in Act 2.

We are excited to host the 6th annual Schmeeckle Shakes performance of As You Like It directed by Susan Edgren! The show will be performed at at the Pankowski Family Amphitheatre in Schmeeckle Reserve, Stevens Point, WI. 

As You Like It is a pastoral comedy in which Rosalind, banished from court by her usurping uncle, flees to the Forest of Arden disguised as a young man named Ganymede, accompanied by her cousin Celia and the fool Touchstone. There she encounters Orlando, the man she loves, who is also a fugitive and who fills the forest trees with love poems in her name — unaware that the witty “Ganymede” coaching him through his feelings is Rosalind herself.

Auditions

Auditions will be held on June 15th and 16th @6:30pm. Callbacks as needed will be May 28th @6:30pm. Please, submit the online audition form prior to auditions.

What to expect when you come to auditions:

1. Arrive 5 minutes before 6:30pm at the Shack.
2. Finalize your physical audition form (your online form will pre-fill many spots).
3. Based on your desired characters, actors will read from sides of the script with other actors to show their skill/talent/energy.
4. Any actors that play a musical instrument (that brought them) can play a song (optional)

Auditions and rehearsals will be at The Shack, 2952 Minnesota Ave in Stevens Point.

Tech Week for the production starts Sunday, August 9th and goes through Wednesday, August 12th.

Production Dates are Thursday through Sunday –   Thursday, August 13th thru Saturday, August 15th @ 6:00pm, and Sunday, August 16th @ 2pm.

Characters

DUKE FREDERICK – younger brother of previous duke; he usurped his brother’s rule and exiled him. Duke Frederick is extremely stern, humorless, tyrannical.
(this role may be doubled to include the exiled brother, Duke Senior) male
DUKE SENIOR – kindly brother making the best of living in the forest. male
CHARLES – Frederick’s champion wrestler. Male
LEBEAU – a fop, court messenger for Frederick. Male
ROSALIND – daughter of exiled Duke Senior, charming, spunky. female
CELIA – daughter of Duke Frederick, loyal to her cousin Rosalind, but obedient to
her father. female
TOUCHSTONE – the court fool for both dukes, smart ass skirt chaser. male
JACQUES – lord in Duke Senior’s court; sarcastic, gloomy, sardonic pessimist. male
ORLANDO – nice, hard working young man who wants a better life. male
OLIVER – older brother to Orlando; jealous, vindictive, greedy. male
AMIENS – Frederick’s friend and court musician; must be able to sing and accompany him/her self on portable instrument. (guitar, mandolin, banjo, ukulele, accordion, concertina as examples) . Will read and perform short song for audition. m/f
AMIENS’ MUSICIAN BAND MEMBERS – no lines, just play New Orleans style jazz music. Play something short for audition. m/f
ADAM – Orland’s faithful old servant. Male or female. m/f
SYLVIUS – shepherd deeply, painfully in love wit Phoebe, male
PHOEBE – shepherdess who is decidedly not in love with Sylvius. F
AUDREY – goat herder; well endowed, wooed by Touchstone. Female
THERE ARE A FEW OTHER ROLES THAT WILL NOT BE READ FOR DUE TO PLANNED MULTIPLE CASTING.
